  • Check to see if the beads are melted together. Continue to iron for another 10 to 20 seconds, if necessary.

The Perler beads are melted correctly when the parchment paper sticks to the beads and needs to be peeled away from them.

What are Perler beads?

Perler beads are small, plastic, cylindrical beads that are also called “fuse beads” or “melty beads”. This is because Perler beads are designed to be melted together!

Place the Perler beads, one by one, onto a plastic pegboard and create a pattern of your choice (like one of these fun Christmas designs). Then cover the design with parchment paper and iron the beads together — the heat from the iron will fuse the beads together into one piece.

FAQs

How do you combine perler beads? ›

In a circular motion, begin to iron the project. Beads need heat for about 10-20 seconds per side to fuse evenly, but it's possible additional heating time may be required. With more time, heat and/or pressure, the beads can close up and flatten which would make any assembly of your project more challenging.

What is the difference between perler beads and fuse beads? ›

Fuse beads are smaller and have a smooth, shiny surface. Perler beads are larger and have a matte finish. Fuse beads are melted together using an iron, while perler beads can be fused together with an iron or by threading them through a piece of string. Both of them are excellent craft toy choices for kids.

What size perler beads are best? ›

The most common bead size is 5mm in diameter, suitable for both adults and children. For very young children around three years old, there're large beads for sale with a 10mm diameter called Biggie Beads (Perler), Maxi Beads (Hama), or Jumbo Beads (Nabbi).

Do perler beads work with wax paper or parchment paper? ›

A: Do not use wax paper as the wax melts to the iron and beads. Use parchment paper.

What is the app that makes Perler bead patterns? ›

Beads Creator is a super easy to use application that allows anyone to easily create bead patterns. The total number of downloads has reached 1,400,000.

Which is better Hama or Perler beads? ›

Hama beads have a lower melting point than perler beads, and you can see from this picture that they look quite a bit different when melted. The hama beads ended up being noticeably shorter and more rounded at the top (like nabbi beads) than perler beads. They also have a bit more gloss to them than perlers.

How do you keep Perler beads together without an iron? ›

If you don't necessarily want to take the iron or steam iron out of the cupboard every time, there are alternatives to using an iron:
  1. simply fix them with a glue dot.
  2. Melt them in the oven.
  3. weave them with a needle as you will do with your Miyuki beads.
  4. Use the old method of filling a pan with hot water.

Can you fuse Perler beads without an iron? ›

Use a pot of hot water

The water doesn't have to be boiling, but a hot pot does wonders. The pot and water do a good job of holding heat. You can place a wax sheet over your design and place the pot of water on top. Give it 30 seconds or so, and voila, your beads are fused.

What is the world's largest Perler bead art? ›

Worlds biggest picture made of plastic beads - The students at Fryshuset High School (Stockholm) has built the largest perler bead painting in the world. About 80 students beaded for 4,5 hours to finish 170 plates= 153000 beads.

Why tape Perler beads? ›

The tape method is a technique used to to remove a project from its pegboard before ironing it. The main reason we use the tape method is to prevent the plastic pegboard from warping under the heat of the iron. Warped boards are very hard to get flat again and may not be worth the effort over buying new ones.

What paper do you put over Perler beads? ›

Take your parchment paper, which is also sometimes called ironing paper, and place it over the beads on the pegboard. You should be careful when doing this so that you don't accidentally knock any beads out of place. Heat a dry iron to a medium setting, then slowly run it in a circular motion over the parchment paper.

How do you fuse Perler beads without an iron? ›

Use a pot of hot water

You can place a wax sheet over your design and place the pot of water on top. Give it 30 seconds or so, and voila, your beads are fused. Here's a video demonstrating the technique. Note: Take a look at these accessories for Perler beads.

What is the best glue for Perler beads? ›

It's widely accepted that E6000 glue is the best glue for fuse bead projects. This has also been my experience. E6000 is a carcinogen, so be sure to use this glue in a well ventilated space and do not let it on your skin. Gorilla glue spray is good for mounting projects on canvas.
