Curlie Crochet Pattern
Get ready to crochet your new cuddly BFF – the Curlie! The Curlie pattern is perfect for all crochet levels. MATERIALS (what I used in parentheses)
- 120 yards of medium weight yarn (worsted, aran, or 10-ply) in 1 color (Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran)
- You can also use lightweight yarn (light worsted or dk weight yarn) with a 2.25mm (B) hook for a slightly smaller Curlie!
- 2.75mm (C) hook (Clover Amour)
- Toy stuffing (Fairfield Poly-Fil)
- Stitch markers (Clover Quick Locking Stitch Markers Small – I LOVE these, they don’t leave big holes in your work!)
- 3×2 inch piece of beige or brown felt (TaDaa Studio Bamboo Felt in Sand Dollar [beige] and Coconut Shell [brown])
- Embroidery floss in black for face (DMC Embroidery Floss in black)
- Beige sewing thread
- Embroidery/sewing needle
- Tapestry needle (DMC Tapestry Needle Size 16)
- Scissors (Gingher Stork Scissors)
- Optional: water soluble marking pen for drawing on your Curlie face before embroidering (Wrights Water Soluble Marking Pen)
- 2 sewing pins

GAUGE & FINISHED SIZE
12 single crochet stitches x 13 rows = 2×2 inches
Curlie’s final size – approximately 7.5 inches tall and 11 inches in circumference (measured around the body and arm loop).

- When stuffing legs and arm tube, you can use the end of your crochet hook or a chopstick to push the stuffing into it.

MAKING THE FACE
Making your Curlie’s face is the most important part of the pattern! It gives your Curlie its super sweet personality – so take your time making the face, it’s worth it!
Before starting, use a piece of semi-transparent paper (computer paper should work) and a pencil to trace the “face template” oval. Don’t press too hard or you may damage your screen! Because screen sizes differ, take a measuring tape and resize your screen until the face template measures 6 cm wide and 4 cm tall. This should give you the perfect size oval. Then choose which Curlie face you’ll make. I’ve provided 4 options (not to scale), but feel free to make up your own!
ATTACHING THE FACE
Using your sewing needle and beige thread, you will be attaching your Curlie’s face with whipstitch.
When sewing through crochet, make sure you are going through the yarn, not between your stitches (the holes). This reduces how much your thread moves and will ensure that it’s secure.
BODY, CONTINUED
rnds 26-31: Sc around (53 sts for 6 rnds)
rnd 32: [sc 13, inv dec] 3 times, sc 6, inv dec (49 sts)
rnd 33: [sc 5, inv dec] 7 times (42 sts)
rnd 34: [sc 4, inv dec] 7 times (35 sts)
– – – START STUFFING THE BODY AND CONTINUE STUFFING THROUGH RNDS 35-38 – – –
rnd 35: [sc 3, inv dec] 7 times (28 sts)
rnd 36: [sc 2, inv dec] 7 times (21 sts)

Sl st 1 into first st of rnd, fasten off, leaving an 8-inch long tail for weaving in. Finish off.
LEGS (MAKE 2)
rnd 1: Start with a magic ring, sc 6 into ring (6 sts)
rnd 2: [inc] 6 times (12 sts)
rnds 3-20: Sc in each st around (12 sts for 18 rnds)
Sl st 1 into first st of rnd, fasten off, leaving a 15-inch tail for attaching. Stuff legs lightly to allow bending.
ARM LOOP (MAKE 1)
Start with a 15-inch beginning yarn tail for attaching. See photo tutorial below for photo references.
rnd 1: Ch 12, sl st 1 into top of first ch to form a circle. (Photo 1)
rnd 2: Ch 1 (count as first st), sc around (12 sts) (Photo 2)
rnd 3: Sc around (12 sts)
rnd 4: Sc 7, sc 5 in the rnd below (12 sts) (Photos 3-4)
rnd 5: Sc around (12 sts)
rnd 6: Sc 7, sc 5 in the rnd below (12 sts)
rnd 7: Sc around (12 sts)
rnd 8: Sc 8, sc 4 in the rnd below, remove sm, sc 1 in the rnd below, replace sm in first st of next rnd (you will be moving your stitch marker 1 st to the left) (12 sts)
rnds 9-24: Repeat rnds 5-8 4 more times (12 sts for 16 rnds) (Photo 5)
rnd 25: Sc around (12 sts)
rnd 26: Sc 7, sc 5 in the rnd below (12 sts)

Sl st 1 into next st. Fasten off, leaving a 15-inch tail for attaching. Lightly stuff arm tube to allow bending (Photo 6).
ATTACHING THE ARM LOOP
Attaching the arm loop is a little tricky because it’s one piece. It’s helpful to place sewing pins where the outer portion of the top of the arm should be. We are placing the arm loop onto 6 rounds of the body from the round below the bottom of the face.
The pink dots indicate where you will be attaching your arm to the body starting with the right side. From your sewing pin, count 5 stitches down. This is where you will begin attaching your arm loop. When attaching, the inside of the arm loop will be your “sc in the round below” side.
ATTACHING THE LEGS
We’ll be attaching the legs to rounds 33 and 34. Place a sewing pin in the center of your Curlie at round 34. You will be connecting the legs to either side of the sewing pin. See the stitch placement image to the right for where to attach legs.
