Soothing Lavender Foot Soak Recipe {Simple Homemade Gift Idea} - My Frugal Adventures (1)

Here is a super simple homemade gift idea to treat someone special or as a treat for yourself (you deserve it!).

This comes together in just minutes and it is extremely inexpensive to make. You might consider these as bridal shower gifts or for MOPS crafts or even something to make with the kids. As my little girls get older we have started making more and more DIY beauty products and they love them! How fun would this be to make a little slumber party?

This foot soak is amazing- especially for summer- for soothing tired and aching feet. If you wear heels or sandals a lot in summer, this will soften your skin so it is super easy to do a perfect at home pedicure. I wear flip flops a lot in summer and when I am doing a ton of walking, I make a point to do one of these foot soaks every night as the epsom keeps your feet soft, clean and lovely as can be 😉

I just had a long day recently and I was just tired. You know those days when everything aches and you just want to crawl into bed at like 7pm and come back out 12 hours later? Well that doesn’t work around these parts because I have stories to read, outfits to pick out, lunches to pack, kitchens to tidy and so on…

So instead I took my 5 year old into the bathroom and she and I both sat with little soaking foot bathes while I read her bedtime story. Let me tell you she got such a kick out of our little spa night- once she was finally in bed and drifting off to sleep I could see the sweetest little smile. #Priceless

*NOTE: The epsom salts are the real magic element here. I added some lavender essential oils for the pleasant fragrance but you can omit that entirely or use a fragrance of your choice.

Anyhoo- here is how you can make your own DIY Lavender Foot Soak.

  • 1/2 Cup Epsom Salts
  • 2 tablespoons baking soda (optional- baking soda makes skin smoother and promotes healing of any little bumps or scratches etc.. on the skin.)
  • 6 drops lavender essential oil (this is what I use)
  • 1-2 drops colorant or food coloring (optional)

To mix this up couldn’t be easier, just combine the epsom salts and baking soda in a bowl or mason jar, add your essential oil- 6 drops was plenty for me to get a lovely fragrance, and add one or two drops of either colorant (available here or in craft stores) or a food coloring. The colorant is the best bet for homemade beauty products but I actually used a drop of Neon McCormick Food Coloring for my foot soak. The Neon package has a purple color inside that is lovely. If you use food coloring do not use more than one or two drops as you don’t want to take any chances of discoloring a tub or skin.

When you are ready to soak, just add the hottest water you can stand into a large bowl and dump in the amount of salts you like. About 2 tablespoons for a light foot soak or 1/4 cup for a more concentrated foot soak. I actually bring these when I travel to cities like New York because my feet will be black by the end of a long day walking around (so gross!) I dump 1/4-1/2 cup of these salts into the hotel sink to soak my feet at night before bed. Let soak for 10-15 minutes and then you can start your DIY pedicure or dry your feet, slather with a thick foot creme (this is my favorite) and pop socks on.

And that is it! Happy Feet!

Literally done in minutes. The lovely thing is that you can also use this as bath salts for an evening bath. The recipe above will make a generous amount for about 4 uses so I have plenty leftover for my girls to use at bathtime tonight. Lavender is so calming and relaxing it is a perfect way to end your evening.

And if you give this a whirl– please come back and let me know what you think!

Charlene, where’d you get that darling little wooden bowl & spoon? I’d love to make some of this and give it as a gift with the bowl & spoon!

Hi! What a great idea this foot soak. So I want to make this recipe for my sisters Bridal shower as favors, will probably be putting them in 4oz mason jars. How long will they be good for once it’s made and in jars?

Hi Becky- these will last a very, very long time just fine. I personally think essential oils are more effective when used somewhat quickly so I prefer to make smaller batches. I know people like to do homemade items in bulk so I personally prefer to make say a month’s worth as opposed to 6 months or a year as I think they work better. Nothing in the ingredients list will go bad though so shelf life is not really something to be concerned about. 🙂

    Hi Charlene.
This is a random observation, but we have the same name. Anywho, on to the actual question: Can we use any type of essential oil for this? For example, peppermint?

  6. Soothing Lavender Foot Soak Recipe {Simple Homemade Gift Idea} - My Frugal Adventures (13)Charlene says

Yes any essential oil would be fine. This is meant to be soothing though so I choose lavender. Rosemary or Eucalyptus would also be nice. Peppermint tends to be energizing and gives your skin a tiny tingle. So you could try it but it wouldn’t be relaxing more energizing 🙂 I love Peppermint and have lots of lotions and things in peppermint that are very nice.

    Hi!
Ok…I just have to know. When you say that you dump this into the hotel sink and soak your feet, I was wondering how? Where do you sit? Nice idea to try if I could figure it out!

Ha ha- Deborah depending on the hotel I sit on the counter of the bathroom sink 🙂

hi, just a question does the food colouring stain the skin?

    Hi Natalie,

No it is diluted enough so that you won’t have staining on skin or your tub 🙂

Hi we made this scrub and it is extremely nice. However we have one question, how did you obtain that vibrant color!? Ours did not come out quite as bright!

Hi Shelby- did you try food coloring? I like this one:

    https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_2?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=neon+food+coloring&_encoding=UTF8&tag=myfrugadve-20&linkCode=ur2&linkId=013c5ab70e4e87357d21266853089436&camp=1789&creative=9325

The neon color looks so much nicer to me than regular colors. I should recommend soap dye to you though just to be super safe 🙂 I have never had issues with food coloring staining my skin or tub in these types of recipes but please be aware that could be an issue to consider with standard food coloring.

    HTH!

    Charlene
