How to Create Easy Unicorn Valentines + Free Printable (2024)

Today I’m going to show you two methods for How to Create Easy Unicorn Valentines!

Unicorns are all the rage right now and if you are anything like me and my daughter, we can hardly get enough of them. I collected unicorns when I was a girl and it’s a lot of fun watching my daughter discover the magic of these creatures too.

She is in second grade and loves to give valentines to her classmates. So we were brainstorming some Valentine card ideas that she could share with them, and one idea that lept to our minds was a sweet unicorn card.

I also wanted to find a way to make this a non-candy card – although you could easily use candy for this – but we wanted to find a way to stand out a little bit.

So I sat down with my design software and hand-created a sweet unicorn printable and I’m sharing it for free with you!

Today I’m going to show you two ways to make these cards. The first method will be using the “print then cut” feature with my Cricut paper cutting machine. Which is my preferred way to make these cards

If you don’t have a paper cutting machine, no worries. I also have a PDF you can download, print, and cut-out by hand.

I’m often saying that my Cricut is probably one of my most used craft supplies. And it’s true! It wasn’t always this way because I hadn’t taken the time to properly learn how to use it, but once I did, it really changed the quality and amount of projects that I could make.

For this method of the project, here’s a list of things you will need:

  • Unicorn Valentines available in my Free Resource Library (more about that in a moment)
  • Cricut Design Space software
  • Cricut Machine (I’m using my Cricut Maker but you can use any machine that connects to the software)
  • Cardstock
  • Glitter Lip Gloss (for the horn)
  • Washi Tape

First, you will need to get the Unicorn Valentine file from my blog’s Free Resource Library.

When you sign up to receive my email newsletter you are automatically sent a password to access the library. You’ll also receive my weekly newsletter with behind the scenes details, notes from me, and links to the latest happenings on my blog.

Once you’ve logged in, the file you need is called Unicorn Valentine Print then Cut. Click to download the zip file. Unzip the file; inside you will see that there are three versions of the Unicorn for you to use.

[dropcaps]2[/dropcaps] Upload to Cricut Design Space

  1. Now, launch Cricut Design Space;
  2. Click “New Project;”
  3. Click “Upload”;
  4. Choose “Upload Image,” navigate to the file you downloaded.
  5. Find the PNG file you want to use and click “Open”;
  6. Choose “Complex”;
  7. Don’t do anything with the next screen except click “continue”;
  8. Choose the “Save as Print then Cut Image”. It may take a moment. This will add the image to your library.

Repeat this step with each unicorn image you want to use.

Once they are all uploaded, select the image you want to work with and click “Insert Images.”

As you can see it’s a large image. One of the great things about Design Space is that you can make these cards any size that you want.

For our project today I’m going to show you the size and details I used to make mine. But, just know that you can make these any size that you need.

One of the reasons that I went with this size was because I wanted to be able to print more than one on a page. So I sized them in a way that I can print two per page.

I sized my card to “5 inches” tall. It will automatically keep it in the proper scale.

Make sure the print icon is next to the card in the panel and you are ready to Make it!

Click Make It and ta-da! It will prepare the mats for you.

Be sure you cutting machine and your printer are connected to your computer, or iPad or phone or whatever you’re using to connect to the software.

Click Continue

Want to print multiples? If you want to print multiples of these cards you can choose a higher number than 1 in the left-hand corner under Print Copies.

Once you have told it how many copies you want to print, load your cardstock paper into the printer. Press the Send to Printer button.

Use these default settings and press Print.

Once the printer prints you need to put the label paper on your cutting mat.

Now you need to Set Your Material.

For mine, I chose Medium Cardstock, 80 lb. And then I also chose the “More” pressure button. I didn’t want to take any risks of this not cutting through.

Now, simply load the mat into the machine; and press the flashing arrow button; once it’s loaded press the flashing “C” button and the machine will do the rest. Once it’s done cutting for you press the flashing arrow button to eject it.

Now you need to offload the cutting mat.

I prefer to offload mine by placing the cut side face down in front of me and roll the mat away. This helps whatever I’ve cut to not bend and curl.

If you have multiple sheets as I did, just keep repeating to print and cut all of your mats.

Once you’re done you’re ready for the final step – attaching the horn to the card.

Before I show that though, let me show you how to create these cards if you do not have a Circut and want to just use a PDF to print and then hand cut them.
